I Used This Device For A Week And My Maskne Healed So Much Faster

[Reviewed by Her World Singapore Editor, Hidayah Idris]

Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++ USB Rose Gold ChromeI don’t know if I have good or bad luck, but just before I review any product, my skin tends to break out. So as luck would have it, a week before I was due to start reviewing the Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++, I broke out after using a new brand of surgical masks. I had painful pimples and clogged pores along my jawline.

The upside: I could then see if the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++, which has blue LED light that is used to soothe and heal acne, helps my maskne.

The device has been lauded by celebrities and influencers, and received rave reviews by thousands of fans all over the world, so I was hopeful that it would work. Moreover, the device was inspired by NASA technology, so I expected to see some real results using it.

When I started my trial, I used the blue light on my jawline. You might wonder: How does shining blue LED light even help? The light is supposed to kill acne-causing bacteria and make oil glands less active, hence reducing breakouts.

One thing to note if you’re using this during an active breakout: Don’t glide the device over your bumps too hard because it can be painful. Instead, I simply shone the blue light close to my skin, for about half a minute on each area.

After using it for a week, I am happy to report that my maskne has reduced drastically, while my pimples healed faster than usual. I’m comparing this to the rate at which my zits usually heal when I use pimple patches.

How the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++ works
Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++ USB Rose Gold ChromeIn case you’re wondering what the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++ is and why everyone is gushing about it, it’s an award-winning device that is said to offer the benefits of 3,000 facials.

It uses NASA-inspired coloured LED Chromotherapy to tackle various skin issues, depending on the colour of light. Skin Inc says it’s safe to use even if you’re pregnant.

The device has five lights, and you can easily switch among the colours by pressing the power button:

  • Red: Renews and repairs skin cells
  • Blue: Soothes inflamed skin
  • Yellow: Heals irritated skin and helps give skin a glow
  • Orange: Renews and repairs skin cells + heals irritated skin and gives skin a glow
  • Purple: Soothes inflamed skin + renews and repairs skin cells

Each cycle runs for 10 minutes, so you’re essentially getting a 10-minute at-home facial by using it. You can also think of it as a form of self-love because you can escape work e-mails for that duration, which is probably one of the best rewards in this work-from-home situation.

Why do you need five lights? To customize your “facial”, of course! You can use different lights on different areas, or even different days, depending on your skin condition.

According to the instructions, you’re supposed to use it as you would a massager – with direct contact to your face, and in circular motions. Personally, I prefer to use circular motions on my cheeks and forehead, and upward motions around my jawline and under my cheekbones.

The great thing about the device is that it is rechargeable via a USB cable, so you don’t have to fumble with batteries. That also means less electronic waste is produced.

The technology behind Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++
The technology behind Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++The device uses sonic technology, which has pulses at 3 MHz/s. The low-frequency stimulation is supposed to help regenerate cells and help skincare products better penetrate into skin.

Skin Inc recommends that you use the device with a water-based serum or moisturiser to help it glide better over skin. My choice of serum: Skin Inc’s Licorice serum. Water-based serums like this have smaller molecular sizes and are hence more easily absorbed into skin. The brand also recommends that you pair it with the Pure Deepsea Hydrating Mask for overnight repair.

I have sensitive skin, but the device doesn’t leave any redness. I also noticed that after using the device, my skin absorbed my follow-on moisturiser a lot better too.

Don’t have a water-based serum on hand? You can still use the device, but you’re advised to switch off the sonic function. Simply do so with just a touch of a button on the device.

Other benefits of Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++
Other benefits of Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++One immediate effect of using the device is the visible glow on your skin. This is both due to the effect of the LED light, and the massages, which improve blood circulation.

When I wasn’t battling a breakout, I would switch among all five colours within 10 minutes because I’m kiasu and want to get the benefits of all the lights. However, I concentrated on using the red and orange lights (to renew and repair) on my forehead after I spotted a few lines.

The device is also said to help sculpt your face, and I did notice that it makes my face look less puffy immediately after using it.

However, the results only lasted for a few hours. The next day, my face went back to looking bloated, probably because of salt retention from my late-night snacking habit. But I would definitely reach for this device in the morning if I had an important event that I need to look snatched for.

How the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright Eyes works
Skin Inc Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright EyesApart from the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++, Skin Inc also has the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright Eyes, which I tried for a week.

It looks like a pair of really cool sunglasses sans the lenses. Instead, there’s a strip of LED lights just under each eye, in three colours: red to minimise fine lines around the eyes, yellow to brighten dark circles, and orange, which combines the benefits of red and yellow light.

Similar to the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++, you supposedly only need to use this for 10 minutes a day to see results. And like the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++, this award-winning product was also inspired by NASA.

If you’ve seen me without makeup, you’d know that I have a bad case of dark circles. Since this device is said to help with dark circles, I was more than ready to give it a go.

How to use the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright Eyes
Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright EyesWhen I first put it on, the red light was a bit glaring, so I closed my eyes and rested to combat the unease. The good thing is, I got over the brightness after two uses and went about my usual activities at home (aka watching Netflix and snacking). Best of all, there’s no need to lie down as the glasses won’t slide off.

PSA: If you use this device in the dark (I’m one of those who like watching Netflix in the dark), the LED light is more glaring.

I’ve only been using Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright Eyes for a week, so I can’t say if it has helped with my dark circles, but I’m optimistic that long-term use will help.

What I did notice is that it aided in the absorption of eye cream. The skin around my eye area looks less dehydrated, and my peepers look less puffy, just as the device promised. For something that takes only 10 minutes a day and doesn’t interfere with my daily routine, this is definitely something I could continue using.

The Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light++ USB Rose Gold Chrome is priced at $408, while the Optimizer Voyage Tri-Light Glasses for Bright Eyes costs $298, at all Skin Inc stores, www.iloveskininc.com.sg and Sephora outlets.
